                     Job Description

Summary of duties:

The Operations Director leads the establishment, development, and management of Wanza Logistics PLC’s freight forwarding operations. The position is responsible for designing and implementing a competitive, efficient, and compliant freight forwarding service covering air, sea, and land freight. The Director ensures operational excellence, regulatory compliance, strategic growth, and strong partnerships with local and international logistics stakeholders.

Detailed Job description:

1.        Develop and implement the company’s freight forwarding strategy aligned with Wanza Logistics’ overall business objectives.

2.        Lead market research to identify business opportunities, key trade corridors, and competitive positioning.

3.        Prepare annual business plans, budgets, and performance targets for the directorate.

4.        Represent Wanza Logistics in industry forums, trade associations, and regulatory bodies.

5.        Oversee end-to-end freight forwarding operations (air, sea, and inland) ensuring on-time, cost-effective, and quality service delivery.

6.        Establish Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for shipment handling, customs clearance, warehousing, and documentation.

7.        Coordinate with transport, warehousing, and customer service units for integrated logistics solutions.

8.        Manage and monitor agents, carriers, and partners for service performance and compliance.

9.        Identify and acquire new customers in import/export markets.

10.    Develop and maintain strong relationships with key accounts, government agencies, customs, and port authorities.

11.    Negotiate rates and contracts with airlines, shipping lines, and agents.

12.    Ensure customer satisfaction through proactive communication and issue resolution.

13.    Monitor financial performance against set targets (revenue, margin, cost efficiency).

14.    Approve quotations, invoices, and cost sheets within delegated authority.

15.    Ensure compliance with company policies, audit requirements, and financial controls.

16.    Provide regular management reports, performance dashboards, and improvement recommendations to the General Manager.

17.    Ensure full compliance with Ethiopian customs laws, international freight regulations, and company policies.

18.    Oversee proper documentation for all imports, exports, and transit shipments.

19.    Manage operational risks, including cargo security, insurance, and legal compliance.

20.    Implement quality management systems (ISO or equivalent) and continuous improvement initiatives.

21.    Build and lead a high-performing team of freight forwarding professionals.

22.    Provide training, mentoring, and performance evaluations.

23.    Foster a culture of customer service, accountability, and operational excellence.

24.    Ensure safety, discipline, and professional conduct across all units.

25.    Performs other duties related to the job as required by the General Manager.

JOB SPECIFICATION

Basic Education

§  Master’s degree in Logistics & Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Management, Transport Management.

Work Experience:

§  7 years of relevant experience, out of which 4 years in supervisory role

Skills & Competencies:

Ø  Strong understanding of international trade regulations, customs procedures, INCOTERMS, and freight documentation.

Ø  Proven experience with air and sea freight operations, multimodal transport, and 3PL/4PL solutions.

Ø  Excellent negotiation, leadership, and communication skills.

Ø  Proficiency in logistics management systems and Microsoft Office tools.

Ø  Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Ø  Excellent organizational and decision-making ability.
